The Weight I Didn’t Know I Was Carrying
Before retiring from my nursing position, I was living in constant stress, living in survival mode, and allowing responsibilities to pile up. Looking back, my anxiety and overwhelm were not all directly related to my nursing position. I loved my role as a nurse navigator. In the time since I retired, I realize my overwhelm was accumulative from all my nursing years, plus carrying trauma, which I didn’t understand was trauma at the time.
Even though I had downloaded the book, The Body Keeps the Score, several years before my retirement, I had not read it and didn’t realize how my stress, overwhelm, and past traumas had affected my physical health, despite knowing I had been emotionally affected.
Letting Go: My Retirement Story
This story isn’t about my weight loss journey, but about finding peace. Earlier in 2023, I had a session with my life coach, and I set a goal to retire by the end of November 2023. I would be 65 in September of that year, and all I could think of was retiring and walking into my coaching practice to offer wellness and health consultations, as well as creating wellness programs and courses. I even wanted to teach others how to create an affiliate marketing and digital content creation business.
I dreamed of living life on my terms and no longer working to help the corporation fulfill its vision and goals. I wrote down goals and envisioned how I wanted to work for myself. After all, I had dreamed of this time for many years. I envisioned slower mornings and quieter days. I was never a “get up early” kind of gal. I thought about how it would be to slow down and breathe intentionally without being interrupted.
Retirement Did Not Begin As Planned
I settled eventually on November 1, 2023, as my retirement date. On October 30th, my 92-year-old mother was taken to the emergency room for unbearable pain in her left upper side. A CT Scan revealed a large lung mass in her left lung. I was shocked. Mom was not a smoker. We still don’t know exactly what it was, as she eventually declined a biopsy and chose hospice instead of treatment. I left my home in eastern North Carolina to care for my mom in Ohio the day after I retired. Mom passed away on December 20th, 2023, surrounded by family.
Beginning My Real Retirement
2024 began with my mom’s funeral. Then, we entered the time when it was the anniversary of my oldest son’s death. Seven years on January 17, 2024. After I got through January, I began looking at my post-retirement goals. I was working on a chapter for a book that I collaborated on. Slowly, the years of working, my grief journey, and overwhelm caught up with me.
I began to work on my sleep patterns. Sleep had been evading me since returning from caring for my mom. The years of pushing down my grief were starting to catch up with me. Survival mode had been my modus operandi (way of operating) for many years, even before my grief journey began. I felt myself slowly crashing, but at the same time, feelings of peace began to sweep over me.
The Quiet Changes I Didn’t Notice at First
I took the time to allow my body to rest. In hindsight, I also realize I was doing intermittent fasting. Breakfast was never a meal I looked forward to participating in. I began to eat when I was hungry, and that wasn’t usually until about noon each day. Listening to my body and its cues for food, rest, and living in the present became second nature. Other than intermittent fasting (which was unintentional), I wasn’t making any changes to my diet.
People began to mention they were noticing I was losing weight and asked what I was doing. I was emphatic that I had not lost weight and wasn’t dieting. After a few months of hearing people mention my weight loss, I did notice a change in my clothing. Finally, I decided to step on the scale and I had lost thirty pounds over a seven to eight-month period. I cleared the scale and weighed again! I got the same result. I was shocked, to say the least.
The Stress-Weight Connection I Had Never Considered
For years, I thought weight gain was simply a matter of what you eat and how much you exercise. But what I didn’t realize was how much stress had quietly been working against me. Living under constant pressure kept my body in a survival state, flooding me with cortisol—the stress hormone known to encourage fat storage, especially around the belly. My body wasn’t ‘failing’ me; it was trying to protect me. When I finally removed the daily stressors, my body no longer needed to hold onto that extra weight. It was never just about food or movement. It was about finding safety again.
The Hidden Role of Cortisol in Weight Gain
Our bodies are designed to survive first and thrive second. When we experience chronic stress—whether from work, relationships, finances, or even just living in a constant state of ‘busy’—our bodies release cortisol. Cortisol is helpful in short bursts, but when it stays elevated for too long, it tells the body to store fat, slow metabolism, and conserve energy. In other words, under stress, our bodies cling to weight as a survival mechanism, even if we’re eating well or exercising. I never realized that my daily stress was sending silent messages to my body: ‘Hold on. Stay ready for the next emergency
How Letting Go of Stress Changed My Body
When I retired, I didn’t just leave behind a job—I left behind a constant source of pressure. Over time, without me even noticing, my body stopped living in emergency mode. I was sleeping better, breathing deeper, and simply living at a slower pace. Without those constant cortisol surges, my body finally felt safe enough to let go. It wasn’t about dieting, supplements, or willpower. It was about creating an environment where my body could heal.
Realizing how deeply stress had affected my body changed everything for me. It made me wonder—what if the real solution to feeling better wasn’t found in another diet or workout plan, but in learning how to live with less stress?
What True Healing Looked Like for Me
Looking back, I realize now that stress reduction was the real ‘plan’ all along, though I never intended it that way. It wasn’t about cutting calories or hitting the gym harder. It was about finally giving my body permission to step out of survival mode. When the constant cortisol surges quieted, my body didn’t have to cling to extra weight anymore. It could breathe, heal, and find its natural balance. True health, I learned, isn’t just about what you eat or how much you move—it’s also about the unseen emotional weight we carry every day.
Now, I realize not everyone has the option to retire early or completely step away from their daily responsibilities. However, you don’t have to wait for a significant life change to start reducing the stress your body carries. Even small shifts—such as setting better boundaries, creating moments of stillness, getting outside for fresh air, or practicing deep breathing—can help calm your nervous system. It’s not about escaping life; it’s about creating small pockets of peace inside it. Every bit of stress you release is a gift to your body, and over time, those little choices add up in powerful ways.
Beyond the Scale: The Deeper Transformation
The 30 pounds were a visible change, but the real transformation went much deeper. As the weight left my body, I noticed a lightness in my spirit too. I slept more soundly, smiled more often, and found joy in the simple moments again. I wasn’t weighed down by the constant pressure I used to carry. Healing stress didn’t just change my body—it changed the way I moved through life. It reminded me that true wellness isn’t measured by a number on a scale; it’s measured by how free, peaceful, and whole we feel inside.
Could Stress Be Holding You Back, Too?
If you’ve struggled with stubborn weight, low energy, or feeling stuck in your own body, maybe the real issue isn’t a lack of effort—it’s a life that’s been lived under too much pressure for too long or trauma you have been holding on to. I spent years trying to “fix” myself with willpower and plans, when what my body truly needed was peace. Stress isn’t just an emotional burden; it becomes a physical one, too. What would happen if you permitted yourself to slow down, to breathe, and to create more space for healing? You don’t have to wait for retirement, a vacation, or some perfect moment. Small choices that reduce stress can start making a significant difference today.
A Gentle Reflection to End
As you finish reading my story, I invite you to pause and check in with yourself. Where might stress be weighing you down in ways you can’t always see? What small shift could you make this week to honor your need for rest, joy, or breathing room? Healing doesn’t always look like doing more—it often looks like doing less, but doing it with intention.
Your body is listening. Your heart is, too. Maybe it’s time to permit yourself to choose peace over pressure—and watch what beautiful changes might unfold.

What a beautifully, powerful and inspiring message here!
Thank you so much Carla! It’s means a lot to see this resonated with you ~ Joycelynn
Thank you so much Beth! I believe as a country our culture is fast paced, and success driven. The world defines success differently than I do, and I believe it’s different than how you would define success as well. Everything is also instant based. People don’t realize that God calls us to rest. Rest is more than sleep. Truly setting aside this rest, to be with God, and soak in His peace is now my hearts desire. Most people don’t realize their true peace doesn’t come from “arriving” or making a certain income. We all have the desire to have out needs met. God is our source though…for it all…
What a powerful testimony. Stress affects us so much. I too have been under stress way too long. I have been doing my best to de-stress and also to eat much healthier and exercise. I’ve lost 15 pounds as a result. I have strongly encouraged my grown children and my younger sister to do this, too, as they’re under a lot of stress. I believe that our whole society is. The other thing that has also helped me is to pray, read the Bible daily, and worship and praise. Congrats on not only your weight loss, but de-stressing and retirement. May it bring you abundant blessings and joy.
